Welcome to building[x]!

Imagine if you will an online learning center that provides the information that you want, no need, about the built environment.  Wouldn't that be great?! That's what I want this site to become.  Now that may be a bold statement but what's life without a few goals.  So what I plan on doing over the next few months is developing a discipline or two at a time.  The pages of these disciplines will contain information from myself as well as other resources from the internet that I have found worth your while. Enjoy.

HVAC 360 - Episode 042 - Gas Monitoring

This week I talk gas monitoring with Scott Bissett of Armstrong Monitoring Corporation.  Gas monitoring is a key ingredient in the safety of occupants and staff when we are talk about a number of applications.  This week we focus primarily on vehicle exhaust and mechanical room exhaust specifically when you are dealing with carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and various refigerants.  I must admit this was a rather lengthy interview but the content is very actionable and will give you a great start in any gas monitoring layout design that you face.  Even if you are not an engineer there gems of information in there that you make you the hero on your project.

Here are the links to their website and their resource center:

HVAC 360 - Episode 038 - Mechanical Insulation

Mechanical insulation is the topic this week when we talk to our guest Ron King, Consultant and Past President of the National Insulation Association.  Insulation goes beyond "the pink stuff" and for ductwork, piping, and equipment it is probably the biggest unsung hero of the green sustainablility movement.  Remember the saying, "The cheapest BTU is the one that you never have to make."  If you find this interesting pass it on to your friends.

HVAC 360 - Episode 037 - Net-Zero Energy Buildings

On HVAC 360 this week we field a listener request and talk with Paul Torcellini, Principal Engineer with NREL, the National Renewable Energy Laboratories regarding Net-Zero Energy Buildings.  This show has a ton of information that I encourage everyone to share.  As Paul said, the more that we can share Net-Zero engineering innovations with each other, the quicker the adoption becomes and the less we will feel like we are sticking our necks out over unproven techniques.

As promised in the episode here are the following links:

HVAC 360 - Episode 036 - Emerson Climate Technologies

This week we return to the AHR Expo for an interview with Mitch Knapke of Emerson Climate Technologies.  We discuss the release of their new product the Copeland Scroll K5 which they report can save refrigeration-related energy consumption 10 percent over current technology.  In addition this compressor also includes Emerson's new CoreSense onboard compressor diagnostics which has to make it one of the most technician friendly compressors out on the market today.  If you like what you hear please pass the episode on.

Also Emerson has a number of mobile apps available.  I haven't played with them myself but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't share.

HVAC 360 - Episode 035 - Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices

Wowzer!  This week I would have loved to have shortened the title but some things are just like that, NCWTD's just didn't cut it.  This week I have the distinct pleasure to talk to Dr. Janet Stout about a recent ASHRAE-sponsored research project she was involved in.  The results of which are very enlightening and thought provoking.  So what are these Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices? In my mind they have always been a replacement for the standard chemical water treatment, the shot feeder and all that.  They have been the darlings of the green movement because less chemicals are good, right?!  Just listen to the interview.  To be clear, these devices have typically been used in building condenser water (cooling tower water) systems.

For those of you interested in contacting Dr. Stout or obtaining a copy of the power point that I made a reference to in the interview, send your request to: info@specialpathogenslab.com or visit the site www.specialpathogenslab.com

If you just want the link to the study:  Biological Control in Cooling Water Systems Using Non-Chemical Treatment Devices, ASHRAE 1361--RP (PDF)

The moral of the story is test your water or advise your clients to.

HVAC 360 - Episode 034 - AeroSeal

HVAC 360 this week talks to Neal Walsh of AeroSeal, who has designed a system and sealant that seals ductwork on the inside from the outside.  This appears to be a great time and labor saver and also can couple with duct cleaning.  This product can be applied to both Residential and Commercial but I keep the focus on the later for our episode.  If you find this episode interesting please let me know and pass it along to someone else who might enjoy it.  For more information visit the AeroSeal website.  UPDATE: here is a look at the product as it was demoed at the AHR Expo. It is a little hard to explain but if you look at this diagram on their website it will clarify it for you.

HVAC 360 - Episode 033 - LG Commercial AC

On HVAC 360 this week I talk to Kevin McNamara VP of LG Commercial Air Conditioning from the floor of the AHR Expo in Chicago 2012.  Mr. McNamara talks about the new Multi V III LG Multi V III(see photo right) that is on the market as well as other aspects of the company here in the US. I have to add here that the audio was slightly affected because of Mr. McNamara's height, I'm guessing 6'-6".  Also I have to add a photo of my favorite LG product the Art Cool Picture.  Yes, the picture hanging on the wall in the photo below is the evaporator section of a split system.  For full disclosure, I have never specified the Art Cool but I love the concept! If you If you have any comments about the episode please drop Art Cool Pictureme a line at matt@buildingx.co or if you enjoyed the show please spread the word an share it.  For those of you who need a few links with their content you can reach LG Commercial HVAC Division at the following Link:
