HVAC 360 Podcasts

Welcome to building[x]!

Imagine if you will an online learning center that provides the information that you want, no need, about the built environment.  Wouldn't that be great?! That's what I want this site to become.  Now that may be a bold statement but what's life without a few goals.  So what I plan on doing over the next few months is developing a discipline or two at a time.  The pages of these disciplines will contain information from myself as well as other resources from the internet that I have found worth your while. Enjoy.

HVAC 360 - Episode 032 - FieldAware Software

HVAC 360 this week talks to Karl Schneider of FieldAware Software from the floor of the AHR Expo 2012 in Chicago.  FieldAware is a new software service that improves efficiency and effectiveness of field personnel.  With an asset management component being released in February 2012, they are off to a good start offering native mobile applications that can help HVAC companies increase their profitability.  For more information, a demo of their product, or a free trial, check out their website:

HVAC 360 - Episode 030 - ASHRAE Virtual Conference

The week I talk with Dennis Wessel, the chair of ASHRAE's Conference and Exposition Committee, about the Virtual Conference that occurs along side the Winter and Summer meetings.  I try to cover everything that a potential attendee might want to know, from signing up to length of access.  Compared to other virtual conferences, I feel this one is really well done, combining a fresh and broad choice of sessions and even some way to ask questions to the presenters.  I even like Dennis's idea of having a firm purchase a corporate access to the conference and use it as a in-house lunch and learn series.  This is really the next best thing to being at the conference and for a lot of professionals really the only viable option.  For more information about this conference and previous conferences check out this link:

HVAC 360 - Episode 029 - EmpoweringPumps.com

In this episode of HVAC 360 I talk with Charli Matthews, founder of empoweringpumps.com.  Topics covered include the purpose of the site, online versus print media, and what the future holds for her site.  My interest in this site stems from Charli's commitment of independent publishing and the fact that she is trying to create a global repository for pumps.  Thanks Charli and keep up the good work.

Check out the Empowering Pumps website.

HVAC 360 - Episode 028 - Howard McKew

On this episode of HVAC 360 I get a chance to talk with Howard McKew, President of Building Smart Software. Howie has a ton of experience to draw from the various industry jobs he's held and often writes about that experience in his columns in Engineered Systems Magazine.  It was truely a pleasure to talk to him and I hope that you enjoy this interview as much as I did.  As usual below you will find a couple of links from the show:

HVAC 360 - Episode 027 - HVAC Theory about Heat Transfer

After an unexpected trip and a hectic holiday season I present the final episode of the year. In this episode I wanted to talk about the basics of HVAC Heat Transfer.  I talk about Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, the three modes of heat transfer in a easy to understand format.  I accomplish this partly by using the analogy of the four natural elements.  Don't get it? Just listen it should make sense.  Also while I was recording this episode I had the phone ring which I managed to edit out but it is not perfect.  If you can be the first to identify where in the recording you hear it I will give you a mention in a future episode.  Lastly, if you enjoy this episode pass it along to others.  Or if you have comments and suggestions pass them along to me as well.  Here's to a great new year, Thanks to everyone for listening. - Matt

A Recent Gem of Class Insight

I was recently reading a back issue of Entrepreneur Magazine (Oct 2011: "To B-school or not to B-school?")  talking about the virtues of whether or not to go to business school  and I just have to share my synopsis.  The article pit the college professor against the recent MBA grad to answer a volley of questions.  It should come as no surprise that the professor's retorts of the questions posed were of a glowing nature in favor of getting the MBA, while the student, at every turn, did not agree (rather strongly I might add).  But the gem, I found, came in the final response of the grad who stated:

" I would still pursue my MBA knowing what I know now.  The people that I met and the networks that I have established because of my MBA made it worth it."

Wow!  Just proves the point that school and course work are less important than the people that you meet and the ties that you develop.  Think about this one as the new year starts.  Strive to break out of your shell even more. Meet and grow some new relationships, no school required.

HVAC 360 - Episode 026 - CIBSE President Andy Ford

The week I'm talking with the President of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, Andy Ford. As engineering is an international endeavor I wanted to voyage away from North America to give a broader perspective as to British Engineering and its institutions.  I really enjoyed talking to Andy and getting to know a little bit about him and his background.  If you wanted to find out more about the Insitution you can find it at www.cibse.org .  Or if you want to get in touch with Andy himself you can do it by emailing him at andy.ford [at] mottmac.com.  If you like this episode please forward a link to it to your friends or co-workers.

HVAC 360 - Episode 025 - Indoor Environmental Quality

For this week's episode I talk with Robert Bean, an Indoor Environmental Quality and Energy Consultant about Indoor Environmental Quality. We talk about the difference between IAQ and IEQ, along with some of the codes that surround this topic.

If you would like to learn more about the code side of things you can get that info at the ashrae.org website or following these links:

ASHRAE Standard 55-2010

ASHRAE Guideline 10-2011

If you are interested in touching base with Robert Bean, you can email him at info [at] healthyheating.com or just visit his site www.healthyheating.com .

On a housekeeping topic, I would like to thank my friend Kris for pointing out the audio distortion in my previous podcasts.  Although my original recordings were clean it seems that the final conversion to the mp3 file format got distorted.  I have now found a work-around for this and I hope you enjoy the change.  Thanks for the feedback Kris!
